MOMO YAMANISHI
Born in 1995 in Suita, Osaka, Japan. Currently based in Chiba.
Momo Yamanishi completed her master’s degree in Metal Casting at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2021. She experienced mountaineering with her father in childhood and was a member of the mountaineering club during her student years. She has climbed mountains across Japan, as well as in Alaska, Nepal, and Pakistan.
At university, she studied traditional Japanese metal casting techniques and other metalworkingmethods. Since 2018, she has explored the commonalities between metal casting andphotography, creating works that traverse the boundaries between photography and sculpture.
Currently, she constructs her own pinhole cameras and develops works centered on the act of“casting” to capture intangible elements such as light and time. Her major solo exhibitions include “The Light/Mustang” (72gallery, Tokyo, 2024) and “Moulding of theLandscape”(ars gallery, Tokyo, 2022). She was awarded the Grand Prix at T3 STUDENT PROJECT 2023 and ZOOMS JAPAN 2024. Her first photobook, “The Light/Mustang”, is published by roshin books in March 2025.
